It’s not the first camera that promises to snap a shot when you throw it in the air — but the Panono throwable panoramic ball camera is the first to take 36 shots while aloft.
Those simultaneously captured images captured from all angles are combined in-camera, and the result is a 360-degree 72-megapixel full-spherical image, which the company says was previously impossible to capture. Panoramas from multiple exposures often have “ghosting” as people move in between shots. “Since all of Panono’s 36 cameras fire at once in every direction, it captures an instant in time that includes everyone—even the photographer—in a blur-free panoramic image,” Panono says. That multiple capture essentially freezes a moment in time, providing an immersive pano in which you can pivot your viewpoint. “We’re creating an entirely new panoramic-photography experience, one that can finally include people and is social,” the Berlin-based start-up adds.
For the best bird’s eye view, the camera’s accelerometer triggers the exposure when the ball is at its apex, the highest point before it begins to return to Earth. However, the device can also be used manually, either handheld or on a pole — no throwing required.
The device is “approximately the size and shape of a small grapefruit” and weighs 0.66 pounds.
It has plastic cover to protect camera lens while throwing.Price is around $550.
